What my rules are

On a Saturday afternoon there are dozens of matches in progress at the same time. Nobody reads forty rows that change every 30 seconds — which is why a big table, on its own, is almost useless.

The rule solves that: you write a condition, and the cell lights up in the match that meets it. Instead of sweeping the table, you look at what lit up.

What a rule is not

It is not a recommendation, a signal, or an alert about an opportunity. StatGol does not know what will happen in the match and has no opinion about it.

The number in the condition is yours, not ours. If you write “on target in the last 15 minutes greater than 2”, you decided that 2 is the threshold that matters. We only check the arithmetic and light the cell.

The difference sounds subtle and is not. A threshold chosen by us, under a name that suggests an outcome, would be a tip disguised as a tool. That is why the threshold is always yours and the label is always neutral.

How to create one

  1. Open the My rules menu, at the top of the panel. It sits next to Columns and Filters.
  2. Start from one of the three ready-made ones, if you like. They go in with one click and can be edited afterwards — it is quicker than building from scratch and it shows you the shape.
  3. Or write your own: field, comparator, number. “Corners in the last 15 minutes”, “greater than or equal to”, “3”. A rule can have up to five conditions, and all of them must hold at the same time.
  4. Give it a name, or keep the default. The name appears in the list and helps once there is more than one. A name you write is not translated: it is yours.

Up to ten rules fit in an account, and they follow you from one device to another, because they are stored in the account and not in the browser.

One condition at a time, to start

The temptation is to write the perfect rule first time, with four conditions. The result is usually a rule that never lights up, and then there is no telling which of the four is too demanding.

Start with one condition, see how many matches light up over an afternoon, and tighten from there. If nothing lights up, there are five possible reasons, and not all of them are your rule.
