Why some competitions have fewer numbers
A column comes up empty for two very different reasons, and the difference is worth knowing: one of them may be fixed some day, the other is not a fault at all.
1. The data does not exist in that tournament format
League position is the clearest example. In a round-robin league every team has a standing. In a knockout cup there is no table — and therefore no position.
That is not missing coverage: it is something with nothing to measure. The same goes for season averages in a tournament that has just started, when there have not been enough matches to compute them.
2. The competition does not send that data
This is the common case, and it is more irregular than it looks. It is not that one competition arrives poor and another arrives rich: coverage varies by field, not only by tournament.
A top division can arrive with possession, shots, corners and xG and still bring one specific field empty. It happens in big leagues, not only in small divisions.
As a rough rule, the further down the pyramid and the further from the big markets, the fewer fields arrive. But it really is a rough rule: the only way to know what a specific match has is to look at its row.
What the panel does, and what it does not do
It does: show a dash where there is no data, and leave the gap visible.
It does not: fill the gap with an estimate, with the league average, or with the previous match's value. Once it is in the table, an invented number is indistinguishable from a measured one, and the whole table loses its meaning.
How to check before relying on it
If you follow a specific competition, open one of its matches and see which columns come filled in. Whatever is blank with the match in progress will stay blank in that competition's other matches.
It is worth doing that before building a highlight rule on top of a column: the rule never lights up where the data does not arrive, and you would spend the week thinking the condition never happens.
The difference between a dash and a zero, and why it changes your reading, is in a dash is not a zero.
